The BBC's Nick Assinder offers a review of Jacqui Smith's first week in office as Home Secretary, one in which the threat of terrorist attacks again raised its ugly head. He is very complementary: "Ms Smith's approach was entirely different [to predecessors], offering instead that calm, considered approach which is likely to maximise the cross-party support for any future changes she may propose". The BBC really need to get a different picture of the Home Sec though, the one they use does not suggest calm and considered, more shocked and confused. Musings on political communication, how it works, or doesn't, what it is and should be and reflections on what our leaders are saying and, importantly, how they say it!

A bit shell-shocked
